Photo and region guide

Take a clear skin or nail photo

  1. Use even light. Keep the affected area in focus and fill the frame.
  2. Take or upload your photo. Select a saved photo to review it.
  3. Tap Preview photos, preview the photos and read the data-sharing notice. Photos are sent only after you check the consent box and tap Send photos.

This experimental review cannot diagnose or rule out disease. Have concerning skin or nail changes assessed by a clinician.

Use a clean, dry hand without nail polish. Ask a helper if needed.

Use an MLH sticker

  1. Create a webcam reference in Hemoglobin → Color reference, then export it and import it on your phone.
  2. Rest your hand beside the same sticker, at the same height and under diffuse, even light. Keep the camera still and the whole middle nail visible.
  3. Capture nail, nearby skin and the sticker together. Avoid glare and shadows. Keep flash and lighting consistent.

Plain white reference only is available for the original workflow.

Retake the photo if it is blurred or has bright reflections.

Mark the required areas

  1. Middle nail: box the whole middle nail, from cuticle to tip and side to side.
  2. Nearby skin: on the same finger, box clear skin between the joint nearest the nail and the next joint towards your hand. Keep joint creases out.
  3. White reference: box an evenly lit area inside the white patch or white paper.

Keep every box separate. Choose Add another photo to add this photo and take another, or Finish & see result to see one average result.

For MLH scans, also mark small, separate boxes inside the orange/red M, blue L and yellow H. Use the sticker background as white.

A note on the model.

Kera estimates hemoglobin from 42 color measurements of a middle fingernail and nearby skin, normalized to a white reference in the same photo.

This app runs the trained three-network ensemble entirely on your device: 42 inputs, 16 and 8 hidden neurons, and one output. It uses the frozen PyTorch weights exported from this project. Photos stay in your browser. At the end of a scan session, numeric readings go to your local Kera server for averaging. Averaging has not been clinically validated. If you choose the separate visual-observations feature, Kera sends the photos you preview to OpenRouter only after your permission. Kera does not save those photos or observations. OpenRouter and the selected model provider’s data policies apply.

15.96 g/LMean absolute error on 50 held-out patient records from the published dataset. Kera did not recruit or examine these patients. This is an aggregate study result, not a margin of error for your reading.

The study used a controlled Logitech camera and lighting setup. Ordinary webcams and MLH sticker correction have not been independently validated. Low hemoglobin was often overestimated. Nail polish, skin differences, white balance, and glare can further affect results.

MLH mode applies an experimental, per-photo color correction to match four measured sticker patches to a saved webcam reference before feature extraction. The original model weights stay frozen. This correction has not been evaluated against laboratory hemoglobin measurements.

The ensemble was frozen before the held-out evaluation. The project’s cross-validation-selected deployment baseline remains Elastic Net; this app uses the neural network as requested.
